Don't get a Lockwood angry. You won't like them when they're angry. In The Vampire Dairies' September 9 premiere, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) is surprised to see his long-absent, black sheep of the family Uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney) turn up for the funeral of his dad, the mayor. But a bigger surprise comes when Mason drops the bomb that werewolfism runs in the Lockwood bloodline! "Mason has learned to harness his rage and is going to serve as a mentor to Tyler," says Taylor. "I've come to teach Tyler that there are choices he can make to control his destiny as a human...or otherwi...

Several details from next summer’s X-Men: First Class have been revealed thanks to an informal phone interviewAICN conducted with the film’s producer (and director of the first two X-Men films) Bryan Singer.

First Class is said to take place in the 1960′s and will heavily play with the style of the day. Audiences will see John F. Kennedy as President and the parallel storyline of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X will play in the background. Overall, the look is said to emulate the original X-Men costumes far more than previous films have, though the film’s chronology pre-dates the First Class story in the comics, meaning that many of the expected characters (Cyclops and Marvel Girl are listed by name) will not appear.

The villain of the film is, as rumored, Sebastian Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon). January Jones’s Emma Frost will appear as the Hellfire Club’s White Queen as well.

The central focus of the film is the friendship between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) and how it falls apart. Xavier will not be depicted as bald or in a wheelchair for the majority of the film, though we will learn what cripples him.

AICN‘s article makes frequent James Bond comparisons, noting that the film will heavily play up the ’60s style, but with retro-future technology in a setting that spans the globe. Russia (a.k.a. the U.S.S.R.) specifically is mentioned.

From the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, here is your first look at Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern! Here’s a clip from EW‘s article:

Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, a cocky test pilot who becomes a ring-wearing intergalactic superhero in this massive sci-fi epic from director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). Though Reynolds has prior experience in the superhero realm from his role as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, playing Green Lantern involved some major challenges, like getting hurled through the air on a wire at up to 60 feet per second to create the illusion of flight. “The first time you do it, you’re seriously considering an adult diaper,” Reynolds says. Still, he couldn’t resist the chance to play the beloved DC Comics hero, whose power ring can conjure virtually anything he can dream up. “Will and imagination are his superpowers,” Reynolds says. “We need a circus of Timothy Learys to think of things Hal would invent with his ring.”

Green Lantern is scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2011 and also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Mark Strong, Taika Waititi, Temuera Morrison, Angela Bassett, Jay O. Sanders and Jon Tenney.

Star of Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey, really wants to play a different kind of Doctor. Doctor Strange. And comics artist-working-in-Hollywood Arne Starr seems to agree, whipping up this piece of art that got Dempsey seen by Marvel Studios.

And now a movie has been announced, with screenwriters hired for the job.

With Dempsey still rather popular from Disney’s Enchanted with a sequel in the works, could this be a very easy piece of casting for the studio?

James McAvoy has been cast to play the leader of the X-Men pack in the upcoming installment of the superhero franchise, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Check out photos of McAvoy

McAvoy will play Charles Xavier, the professor who organizes the X-Men band of mutants into a group that fights for good, in X-Men: First Class. Patrick Stewart originated played the role.

The film, which will be directed by Matthew Vaughn (Snatch, Kick-Ass), is set to start shooting this summer.

McAvoy, 31, is best known for his Golden Globe-nominated performance in Atonement, as well as his role opposite Angelina Jolie in Wanted. He will next be seen in Robert Redford‘s post-Civil War drama The Conspirator.

It’s been touch and go for the last week, but Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has been confirmed to helm X-Men: First Class, 20th Century Fox’s prequel to the lucrative franchise based on the Marvel Comics super-team. Not only have they signed Vaughn, directing his third movie in a row based on comic material, but Fox is confident enough in his abilities to set a release date for June 3, 2011, a little less than 13 months from today.

Basing the movie around a concept by Bryan Singer, director of the first two movies who had already committed to direct Jack the Giant Killer, Fox hired the writing team behind Marvel Studios’ Thor, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, to do a few rewrites on the script with plans to start making the movie this summer. Singer will co-produce along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. So far, no cast has been announced including whether Patrick Stewart will return as Professor Charles Xavier or whether Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine.

The new release date puts the movie in competition against DreamWorks Animation’s sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom and opening two weeks before Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern.

20th Century Fox has provided ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype with this description of the movie:

“X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

It was originally reported that KICK A$$ director Matthew Vaughn had been in talks with 20th Century Fox to direct X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Heat Vision later confirmed that Vaughn had passed on the project, but now the site is taking that back, and saying Vaughn is still interested:

During Fox’s initial courting process, producer (and original “X-Men” director) Bryan Singer sat down with Vaughn and established some common creative ground. Even though the dealmaking between Fox and Vaughn’s team from WME and Brillstein ran into trouble (which caused him to officially pass), and Fox was meeting with other directors, Singer and Vaughn kept talking, with Singer becoming even more supportive of what Vaughn wanted to bring to the “X-Men” universe. Vaughn, in turn, was convinced that “First Class” could be a great opportunity for the director, and Singer’s encouragement got the two sides talking again.

Fox is on the rush to find a director for this project, as they would like to see First Class hit theaters by next Summer. Whether they make that goal remains to be seen, but an announcement from the studio could happen at any moment.

X-Knowledge: Vaughn originally signed on to direct 2006’s X-MEN 3, but dropped out a couple months before filming was to begin.

Where does Marvel go after getting bigger than any other superhero movie when they release The Avengers? They rein it in and get smaller.

Marvel Studios is currently taking meetings with writers and directors to work on small scale movies based on some of their third tier characters. The movies would cost in the range of 20 to 40 million dollars (very small when we’re talking studio films) and would allow them to take risks with less obvious characters and with interesting talent.

Filmmakers are being offered their pick of characters whose names are only familiar to comic fans. Properties like Dr. Strange, Ka-Zar, Luke Cage, Dazzler and Power Pack are among the many that are being tossed around right now. And the attitude seems to be that Marvel is open to bringing any of their characters to the screen at the right price point.

In a lot of ways this is revolutionary. While superhero movies such as Kick-Ass have been made at a lower price point, the big studio system seems unable to keep costs down (Marvel has been just as guilty of this, by the way. Their films were supposed to be cheaper originally). This plan allows Marvel much more flexibility; a 100 million dollar Dazzler movie makes no sense, but one budgeted at 25 million – done right – could be a moneymaker. And at a lower budget these movies don’t need to be quite so mainstream. A 20 million dollar film can take much bigger risks than one that costs a hundred million more than that.

Who knows what will be the first small film announced; Marvel has been meeting with people for some time now, and I don’t think they’re going to wait for The Avengers to be released before they start planning the next phase. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if a smaller film was being developed alongside The Avengers.

This initiative is going to allow Marvel (and new owner Disney) to get more of their brands out into the public eye, and it will allow them to continue building their cinematic universe in intriguing ways. It could also mean that up and coming filmmakers or less mainstream directors could suddenly have the chance to play in the big Marvel sandbox. While Warner Bros is still just reving the engine of their DC Superhero movies, Marvel seems to have a plan that’s going to allow them to keep their characters at the forefront.

In an interview with Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner at the Los Angeles Times about the first two X-Men movies, the discussion veered to Singer directing X-Men: First Class and possibly even X-Men 4.

Talking about why he thinks the “X-Men” movies are suited for him, Singer said:

“I genuinely like the people, and my personality meshes more with this universe than it does with other universes, I think; I see that now at this point… I feel a connection to the X-Men characters and also the ensemble nature of the films. If you look at ‘Usual Suspects” or my last film, ‘Valkyrie,’ I feel especially comfortable with ensemble juggling. In the space between all the characters you can disguise a central thought that’s hidden in all the discourse. I missed that with the singular relationship story of Superman. And, well, it always gives you something to cut to…”

According to the article, Singer says X-Men: First Class will find its axis in the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the point where their friendship soured. It will also detail the beginning of the school for mutants and have younger incarnations of some characters with new actors (He shrugged when asked if Hugh Jackman might appear as Wolverine).

“Just doing younger mutants is not enough. The story needs to be more than that. I love the relationship between Magneto and Xavier, these two men who have diametrically opposite points of view but still manage to be friends — to a point. They are the ultimate frenemies.”

Shuler Donner also has pitched Singer on doing a fourth installment of the previously established “X-Men” franchise and Jackman had lunch with Singer to coax him into a project as well, which may or may not be Wolverine 2. Jackman has said the sequel will be set in Japan and released in 2011.

In the interview, Singer turned to Shuler Donner and said of X-Men 4: “Hold that one off for just a little, I’m fixated on the other one right now.” She nodded and answered, “I will, I will … I’m holding it open with high hopes. It’s totally different [from 'First Class'] and it will be so interesting for you.”

On Tuesday, Fox 411 reported that John Krasinski is the frontrunner for The First Avenger: Captain America, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Both Heat Vision and Deadline New York have received an update on who Marvel Studios is looking at now for the coveted role. According to them, Wilson Bethel (HBO’s “Generation Kill,” “The Young and the Restless”), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four” movies) and Garrett Hedlund (upcoming Tron Legacy) are reading for the role, have tested or have received test offers.

Actors previously reported as testing including Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Chace Crawford, Scott Porter and Patrick Flueger are no longer under consideration, say the sites. The part calls for a nine-picture deal, the second of which would be The Avengers.

To be directed by Joe Johnston, The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled for a July 22, 2011 release.

Yen Press will publish Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Vol. 1 on March 16, with a first printing of 350,000 copies.  Here’s a first glimpse at the book’s cover, as well as an exclusive peek at one of its panels (for a full ten-page excerpt, and the entire Q&A with Stephenie Meyer, see the issue of EW that goes on sale this Friday).

What strikes me, looking at the book, is how faithfully, and how beautifully, artist Young Kim has translated Meyer’s original vision. Kim, who has a fine arts background—in fact, this is her first foray into graphic novels—didn’t just read the book; she absorbed it. Her Bella is the Bella I had in my mind’s eye the first time I read Twilight; her Edward is the Edward I always imagined. It took me back to reading Twilight pre-movie: Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson faded into the background.

Meyer talked to us about all this, and more. Here are a few snippets from our conversation:

The text of your original novel is boiled down so carefully that it doesn’t feel like anything is missing. Were you the one who did that?

I was definitely involved.  I didn’t do the original “script” for the book, so to speak.  But when I got the dialogue with the images, I did a lot of tinkering. In a couple of places, I asked for missing scenes to be inserted.  For example, the conversation in the car that Bella and Edward have after she faints in Biology.

How does the feeling of reading the graphic novel compare to that of reading the original? Does it bring something new to the experience for you?

For me, it takes me back to the days when I was writing Twilight.  It’s been a while since I was really able to read Twilight; there is so much baggage attached to that book for me now.  It seems like all I can see are the mistakes in the writing.  Reading Young’s version brought me back to the feeling I had when I was writing and it was just me and the characters again.  I love that.  I thank her for it.

When this project is done, are you done with Twilight?

I can’t say that I am done with Twilight forever.  I’m not working on anything new Twilight-related now, and probably not for a while.  But there’s still a possibility that I’ll go back and close some of the open doors.

Since her first appearance in Marvel Comics’ “Uncanny X-Men,” #129 Kitty Pryde has operated under a variety of different heroic monikers, such as Sprite, Ariel and Shadowcat. Throughout the years, the young mutant’s costumes and code names may have changed, but the qualities that made her a hero, like her kindness and her courage, never did. One of Kitty’s most heroic moments came at the end of writer Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday’s acclaimed run on “Astonishing X-Men,” when she used her mutant phasing power to save the Earth from a giant bullet that an alien despot had fired at it.

This act of heroism separated Kitty from her teammates, and for some time now, she’s been trapped inside the gigantic bullet as it continued its journey through space. This March, after spending several years in her interplanetary prison,Kitty comes home in “Uncanny X-Men” #522. CBR News spoke with writer Matt Fraction about the return of the fan-favorite character.

Kitty’s exile into space occurred in 2008′s “Giant Size Astonishing X-Men” #1, but plans for her return were in the works even before that issue hit stores. “It’s been at least two years, maybe even longer. I want to say it was my first X-Summit, where I brought up the idea,” Fraction told CBR News. “I knew very early on that Magneto was coming back and would become part of the dynamic of the X-Men. I knew what he was up to and what his personality would be. I also knew how that would complicate and and challenge personal relationships and, ultimately, he would have to demonstrably make good.

“The X-Men may not have reacted by thinking, ‘He’s here. Let’s punch him!’ But they still don’t trust him. So I wanted to build that [trust] by having him give a gift to the X-Men, who are now his people, in the form of Kitty. It felt very right in this weird, full-circle way,” Fraction continued. “It brought all these people back and made sense; especially with the way things are with the current ‘Nation X’ storyline and the emotional and character arcs we’ve been telling for the past eight months.”

Before Fraction implemented his plan to bring Kitty back to the X-Men, he sought out feedback from a fellow creator. “I called Joss Whedon and ran it by him. I enjoyed and respected the job he and John did on ‘Astonishing X-Men,’ so his approval meant a lot to me. I felt like I was asking if it was okay if I dated his daughter,” Fraction joked. “I wanted to make sure that the guy who wrote Kitty’s exit approved, and when he said he liked what we wanted to do, it fired me up to do this crazy story.”

Kitty’s return comes at what seems like a busy time for the X-Men. “Uncanny” #522 is the final installment of the current “Nation X” arc, a story which has found the X-Men dealing with Magneto joining their ranks, the threat of a mysterious new set of enemies and the infrastructure problems stemming from the move to their new island home of Utopia. “Issues #520-521 are kind of the wrap up to ‘Nation X,’ and #522 serves almost as an epilogue or a coda. Everything but the X-Men and Magneto story is resolved by #522,” Fraction explained. “In issues #520-521, the other storylines terminate and everything focuses down to just Magneto and Magneto’s return. Magneto problematizes the question of what exactly Utopia is. As ‘Nation X’ progresses, Magneto will realize that it’s going to require deeds, not words, from him. So he decides to present a gift to the X-Men.”

Kitty Pryde’s return isn’t just a present for the X-Men – Fraction is excited about the character’s return as well. Fraction says that he finds the character very compelling for several different reasons. “I don’t want to say too much and tip my hand, but she’s the one who started off as a kid. For so many of us who read the X-Men chronologically, Kitty was the one who was our age. She was a sidekick-type character at first, but she was also an advocate for us. And, since Kitty, there have been a number of characters for younger readers to identify with, like Jubilee, Armor and Pixie,” Fraction said. “Plus, Kitty was a voice of sanity and sweetness. She was incorruptibly good.”

Earlier this week, Marvel released this trailer promoting Kitty’s return

The story of Kitty’s return will be fully told in “Uncanny X-Men” #522, but the issue also seeds future plot lines in which the character will figure prominently. “The issue has a cliffhanger for the ages, as we go rocketing into the events of ‘Second Coming’ [A crossover event between all the X-Titles which kicks off in March and completes the "Messiah" trilogy of X-crossover stories.],” Fraction remarked. “So we wrap a chapter and get a glimpse of a new one before heading into ‘Second Coming.’”

Kitty doesn’t play a huge role in “Second Coming,” but Fraction isn’t bringing the character back only to let her recede into the background. “‘Second Coming’ is really the story of Cable and Hope, but Kitty will be very important after,” Fraction stated. “Kitty being back is a big part of our next year. With where we are in ‘Second Coming’ and then coming out of it, Kitty’s return couldn’t come at a better time for all involved. So she’s coming back right as there’s a giant Kitty-shaped hole in the X-Men.”

Two artists are helping Fraction bring to life “Uncanny X-Men” #522, and the writer has been very pleased by the work done by both of them. “It’s an extra sized issue. Whilce Portacio is doing the main story. An X-Men legend is coming back to tell the story of an X-Men legend coming back,” Fraction said. “We also got the opportunity to do an eight page bonus story with Phil Jimenez. This was a very special issue that was really important to me and I’m very proud of the way it turned out.”

Kitty Pryde’s return comes at a pivotal point for both the X-Men and the larger Marvel Universe. After she and her teammates face the challenges of “Second Coming,” they’ll find themselves standing alongside the Marvel U’s other champions in a new “Heroic Age.”

“The coming ‘Heroic Age’ is fun because it gives us some possibilities that we’ve not really had in a long time. Issue #526 is our first issue set during the ‘Heroic Age,’ and we have a couple of guest stars,” Fraction said. “The issue is about two characters who have recently had a momentous scene together, and we follow each of them dealing with the ramifications of ‘Second Coming’ and other stories like ‘Siege.’ They both encounter characters in their respective halves of the book, and that helps to queue us up with where we’re going. So it’s fun. I wrote #526 over the holidays and thought it was a blast because you get to see some characters you don’t normally see get together. So, in a way it feels like the X-Men have been invited to a much bigger party.”
